Uh-oh!

I went to the pet store today, and met a cute kitty named BILLY! He was a little shy at first, but warmed up and really got into me petting and loving him (until he was demanding all my attention). What a lover boy! I've never seen a kitty with his markings before, he looked kinda of like a tuxedo kitty, but with different colors. He's got a cream color where tuxedo kitties usually have white, and the part that's usually black was gray with little stripes. He had a long pointy face that was GORGEOUS, and big green eyes. And his fur was soft and uber-silky. He did have some goo in his eyes, and a bit of a runny nose. It breaks my heart that so many of those rescue kitties seem to have colds, and it makes me a little nervous because Kami Kaji was like that when I got him, too (and now look what happened). I'm a little gun shy of kittens that seem to have little heatlh problems, cus I'm afraid it's going to turn into something major. But at the same time, those rescue kitties need extra love and attention, and would surely thrive once they got to their permanent loving homes, right? I can't let fear dictate my actions.

I don't know if I mentioned it anywhere, but when I took Kami Kaji to be euthanized, the lady from the shelter where I got him came to the vet office with me, and was there with me through the whole ordeal. We had become friends in the few months since I brought Kami Kaji home. She was the one who helped me when Kami Kaji has his eye thing going, and she was the one supplying me with medicine and letting me go to the vet on the rescue shelter's dime to help clear up his health issues. Was wonderful and supportive the whole way through. Well, she mentioned to me that the people at the rescue agency decided that whenever I was ready for a new kitten, they would get me one and waive the $150 adoption fee. I was so touched when she told me that!

But the reality of the situation is that I'm about to move into a new home, and that's going to be a HUGE change for me and the boys I already have. Right now doesn't seem like the most prudent of times to get a new kitty. BUT, and that's a big BUTT, my horoscope for the month of March (from my favorite online astrology website, astrologyzone.com) said that the end of March would be a perfect time to bring a new pet home, due to the eclipse that will be happening (and falls in my sixth house):

"The last indication of this eclipse may surprise you. It would be an ideal time to get a new pet. If you recently lost your dog to your ex in a divorce, or gave your little cat to your mother because you moved and couldn't bring your pet along, it may be time to go to the animal shelter to see if one little creature calls out to you. The sixth house rules small domestic animals, and since this is such a positive new moon, if you've been longing for a pet, this would be the ideal time to look."

Maybe I *am* supposed to get a new kitty???????? I love my Bukky and Kumo, don't get me wrong. But there was something magical about there being 4 of us together in a little human/animal family unit. I've already looked at quite a few kittens since Kami's passing (I just haven't been able to help myself), but I didn't bond with any of them (and two of them were siamese). This one is super lovey dovey, just like Kami Kaji was. I guess that's what I'm really looking for -- a super loving cat (no matter what it looks like -- I thought I wanted only a Siamese, but now I think personality is more important than just looks).

Am I crazy? Is this the absolute wrong time to be thinking about bringing another kitty home? I don't want a repeat of what happened with Kami Kaji -- I only want a super healthy baby ready to come live with me for the next 20+ years.

Sigh! Billy sure is cute. :)

I say go follow your horoscope, especially one that is specific to houses and transits, not the sun sign one. Six house does rule domestic and small animals. Which is why my astrologer told me that small animals with my son might not be a good idea (he has an afflicted 6th house). I think if it feels right then go for it. Kami would want you to be happy and the boys will adjust as always. It might even be healing for them too.

      Z. please have Bukky and Kumo tested to assure they are NOT now FIP carriers before you consider an additional adoption.

When I unknowingly brought an FIP infected cat into our kitty coven, all ended up infected and died by association!!!!

You know how brutal it was with KK...well imagine going through it twice...I cried for months as they slowly died off. And then a third passed with FIV...GET EM TESTED!!!!! It's like having bareback (mountain) sex while being HIV pos....BE carefull to protect the loved ones you have at all costs!!!!!

Kisses to you and everybody out there in tribe land - Larz

I've been looking into FIP, and it would cost about $600 each to test them, and even after that it's still all possible to get false negatives/positives. I just don't know what to do about Bukky and Kumo.

I can't get a new anything until I'm settled into my new place.

I went back to the pet store today and saw Billy. There's something very "twitchy" about him. He's a scaredy cat. Poor baby -- he needs a home where he can be secure and stable. But after seeing him today, I know he's not the kitty for me. I could just tell. We didn't have that bond the second time.

But for those of you who read my blog, now you know that I have a new family member -- a little canary. I'm going to try to find its owner (because I literally found it on the street), but if I cannot locate them by putting up signs in the neighborhood, he's definitely got a new home with me. :)

It's definitely possible they are negative. My mother's other cat remained negative even though she spent several months living with (and grooming) the one who died of FIP. None of the other cats who lived with the surviving kitty got FIP. My cats (one of whom had met the one who died) never got FIP. Neither did any of my subsequent housemates' cats.

That's the same anecdotal evidence I've been hearing, and also that the vaccines don't really work. But that doesn't seem to be how the traditional vets repond to it. The truth is they don't really know a lot about FIP, and I already have the sneaky suspicion that there are many more subtle shades of this viral illness than they're aware of yet. I'll bet one day they'll figure out that some forms are more contagious, and some are less. I have heard stories of other cats contracting it in multi-cat households, animal shelters and catteries. I'm sure they'll figure it out, but that was something I encountered during Kami Kaji's illness and reading everything I could find on the internet about FIP -- there appeared to be a lot of "blind spots" in the diagnosis of this illness, probably because there are a lot questions currently unanswered about how and why the virus mutates.
